It had been many years since I last visited Italy, and this time I felt as though I had stepped back into another era. Surrounded by my husband Al, my sister Carol, and friends Roxanne and Fergus, I already knew this trip would be unlike any other. Each moment carried its own sense of wonder, and I felt grateful not only for the beauty of Italy travel, but also for the people who shared it with me.
Milan: Fashion, Food, and Opera
Milan was unforgettable in every way. It was the business and fashion capital I had imagined, yet it felt even more alive in person. Seeing the Duomo and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II filled me with excitement. Even the simple pleasure of enjoying cappuccino and brioche near the cathedral became a memory I will always treasure.
Walking with my sister through her old haunts in Brera made the city feel personal, almost like stepping into her history. She also arranged for us to visit the Armani Museum, where I admired beautiful clothes and creations, including the stunning Privé pieces. Along Via Monte Napoleone, we window-shopped at Prada, Gucci, and Tod’s, and I could not help but admire how naturally stylish the Italians are.
Milan also delighted us through its food:
- Dinners at Mandarin and Nobu
- Vongole pasta and bottarga at a local trattoria
- Cocktails at the Bulgari Hotel
- Simple pizza and pasta full of flavor
My husband’s daily pistachio and hazelnut ice cream became one of the sweetest parts of our journey. One of the most unforgettable experiences was spending three hours at La Scala, watching opera in the most beautiful theater I have ever seen.
Tuscany: A Peaceful Escape
Tuscany felt very different from Milan, and I loved that peaceful change of pace. As we drove into the countryside, I was surrounded by mountains, olive trees, pine trees, vineyards, and bright sunlight. The house where we stayed stood against a backdrop of greens, yellows, and blues so beautiful it felt like living inside a painting.
One highlight was my sister’s celebration at a vineyard, where we enjoyed a wine-making tour that ended in a delicious Italian dinner. On other days, we drove to lovely restaurants nestled among the hills, surrounded by sunflowers and endless greenery.
Florence and Siena: History and Charm
Florence was equally unforgettable, with its courtyards, the Duomo, the Galleria dell’Accademia, and the Ponte Vecchio over the Arno River. I remember the smell of leather in Florence and the wonderful street food at Mercato Centrale. Siena, with its grand plaza and cobblestone streets, felt like something from an old Hollywood movie and carried me back in time.

Filipino Warmth Abroad
The Filipinos we met along the way reminded me of home. They were gracious, helpful, and hospitable, speaking Tagalog with a familiar accent and showing kindness in thoughtful ways. One small gesture I will always remember was how they gave us free water, something we especially appreciated in the summer heat. Their warmth made me feel a comforting sense of belonging, even far from Manila.
Living La Dolce Vita
This vacation truly felt like my own la dolce vita — a sweet and beautiful escape from everyday life. My husband and I, along with my sister Carol and her friends, spent precious time together enjoying the sights, savoring the food, shopping, and simply relaxing.
It was a joy to be together in that way, away from the daily grind of Manila, and to slow down long enough to appreciate each moment. More than just a trip, it felt like a gift filled with laughter, beauty, and memories I will always treasure.
