Building Self-Confidence Through Assertiveness

Growing up, I often struggled with building my confidence. So when John Clements Consultants Inc. started Learning Bites, I signed up out of curiosity, especially since the topic focused on confidence-building.

Discovering Assertiveness Through Elena’s Story

In our first session, we explored the theme: “Build Self-Confidence through Assertiveness.” Before the session began, we read about Elena Amaru from Peru—a mother who started a micro-business out of necessity after her husband lost his job.

Elena had no prior business experience and was navigating unfamiliar territory. Her family doubted her capabilities, insisting she should focus solely on her household. Although her business showed promise, she felt stagnant. Her husband helped, but it wasn’t enough. Then she met Marisol, a friend who introduced her to a life-changing opportunity.

The Power of Community: Salta

Marisol spoke about Salta, a cooperative where women gather to share experiences and build livelihoods. There, Elena found support. She watched a telenovela about Vicky, another woman who overcame challenges with Salta’s help. The group shared stories, voiced struggles, and found solutions together.

After attending Salta sessions, Elena became more confident and assertive. She expanded her perspective and grew her business successfully.

Reflecting on Our Fears

During our session, our facilitator, Miss Tracy Piamonte, asked a couple of questions that we had to really think through. One of the participants mentioned she was afraid of speaking in a public setup due to her lack of confidence, but she decided she would speak up more. Another participant mentioned that he was also afraid due to the fact that he’s the only one who lacks qualifications, but he decided to show his assertiveness and still pushed through. We can note that most of the participants must be brave and face it out of necessity.

Tracy also asked what we feared the most. A few have mentioned fear of uncertainty, mistake, failure, and stagnation. Miss Tracy also relates us to the protagonist of the story and asks us what the hindrances and transformations are. For example, she was inspired, she had her mentor, she had clear goals, and she became confident and assertive. She created her network, and she became more competent and knowledgeable in her business.

Understanding Assertiveness

Tracy explained that assertiveness means being self-assured and confident. She clarified the difference: assertive individuals respect others and foster positive outcomes, while aggressive ones often disregard others and create conflict.

We learned practical skills—how to make requests, build connections, and say “no” effectively. A key takeaway was the JIRP technique:

J – Justifying

I – Individualizing

R – Room to Maneuver

P – Purpose

My Personal Takeaway

What I learned is that confidence and assertiveness are built through preparation and perspective. Elena, Vicky, and my fellow participants reminded me that confidence isn’t innate—it’s cultivated through small, intentional steps. Like Elena, I still have fears, but I now face them with assertiveness, trust in my abilities, and the courage to move forward.
