On October 23, 2024, the Friends of Philippine General Hospital (PGH) organized a Charity Golf Tournament at one of the largest golf courses in the Philippines—Canlubang Golf and Country Club. This event wasn’t just about playing golf; it was about rallying together to support important projects that will significantly impact the hospital and its patients.
Supporting Key Initiatives for PGH
The tournament aimed to raise funds for two major initiatives. First, it will benefit the PGH Bantay Antayan, a building in front of the PGH Emergency Room (ER) complex. This facility provides a place for patients’ companions to wait while remaining accessible to doctors. Often, patients’ families wait in discomfort and stress for news, not knowing where to go. Bantay Antayan addresses this issue by offering them a dedicated waiting area where they can be easily located by medical staff when needed.
Second, the proceeds will help develop the Healing Garden at PGH’s Cancer Institute. This garden is designed to be a peaceful sanctuary where cancer patients, their families, and healthcare workers can find comfort. The garden not only offers a serene place to escape the clinical environment but also supports mental and emotional healing, providing a quiet retreat to process the stress that comes with long-term treatment.
Personal Reflections on the Event
As someone who participated in the event alongside colleagues Tracy Piamonte and Neil Binalla, I found the day exciting and challenging. While Tracy and Neil are seasoned golfers, I’ve spent most of my time practicing on the driving range through John Clements Golf Clinics. This was only my second time playing on a full golf course, and Canlubang was a whole new experience for me.
The course itself was thrilling, known for its dramatic cliffs that required precise long-range shots to avoid hazards. One of the most unforgettable moments was playing on a hole with one of these cliffs, feeling the pressure to hit a shot that could clear the drop. I managed to pull off a 190-yard drive past the cliff, an achievement I’ll remember as a beginner.
Facing Unexpected Challenges
The day became even more memorable when a typhoon rolled in, transforming what was supposed to be a sunny golf day into a rain-soaked challenge. Despite our raincoats, all the players ended up completely drenched. The organizers cut the tournament short, ending at nine holes instead of the usual eighteen. Playing through heavy rain intensified the difficulty of each shot, leaving us soaked but determined.
Celebrating Participation and Generosity
Even with the weather disruptions, the atmosphere stayed upbeat. Although my team didn’t win, there was a shared sense of accomplishment in finishing the game under such conditions. Raffle prizes and generous giveaways from event sponsors rewarded everyone’s efforts, and it was clear that simply participating left everyone feeling fulfilled.
A Meaningful Day for a Worthy Cause
The Friends of PGH Charity Golf Tournament was more than just a game; it raised awareness and supported essential projects for the Philippine General Hospital. Despite the day’s unexpected challenges, everyone left knowing they had contributed to something meaningful. The funds raised will help create a better environment for patients and families, offering a comfortable waiting area or a serene place for peace in difficult times. In the end, the event showed that golf, rain, and camaraderie can indeed make a positive impact.
