My Journey with Iyengar Yoga: Strength, Balance, and Emotional Healing

Five months ago, I embarked on a transformative journey by attending Iyengar yoga classes with Ms. Diane Ngo, a practice celebrated for its focus on alignment, precision, and strength-building. As I reflect on this experience, I realize how profoundly this discipline has shaped not only my physical well-being but also my emotional resilience and outlook on life.

Discovering Mindfulness Through Yoga

Initially, my goal was straightforward: to strengthen my body, improve posture, and enhance flexibility. What I discovered, however, was a practice that goes far beyond the physical. Iyengar yoga has taught me the art of mindfulness—the ability to be fully present and attuned to each moment. With every pose, I’ve fostered a deeper connection to my body, cultivating patience, discipline, and an appreciation for the journey of self-improvement.

Strength and Focus on Mount Pulag

The fruits of this practice became strikingly evident during a memorable hike on January 12, 2025, to Mount Pulag—known as the “Playground of the Gods.” As the highest peak in Luzon, Philippines, and the third highest in the country, Mount Pulag stands at an awe-inspiring 2,926 meters (9,600 feet) above sea level. Its trails weave through the provinces of Benguet, Ifugao, and Nueva Vizcaya, making it a revered destination for mountaineers and nature lovers alike.

The journey to the summit was both demanding and exhilarating. The rugged terrain tested my endurance, but I felt grounded and confident, navigating each step with ease. The breathing techniques I had honed through yoga allowed me to maintain focus and steady my energy. Meanwhile, the physical strength and flexibility I’d developed turned what might have been an intimidating ascent into a rewarding triumph. This experience reaffirmed the profound impact of Iyengar yoga in fortifying not just my body but also my spirit.

Yoga as a Path to Healing

On a deeper level, Iyengar yoga has been instrumental in helping me process the emotional challenges following the loss of my mother on November 2, 2024. Through its meditative aspects, I’ve learned to sit with my emotions, embracing grief with compassion and mindfulness. The quiet moments on the mat have become a sanctuary for reflection and healing, teaching me to navigate loss with grace and resilience.

Iyengar yoga has grown into more than just a physical discipline; it has become a holistic practice that nurtures strength, balance, and peace. It has shown me how to embrace life’s transitions, celebrate personal growth, and find calm amid life’s uncertainties.

As I continue this journey, I remain deeply grateful for the healing and empowerment this practice has brought into my life. Iyengar yoga serves as a reminder that even in the face of life’s greatest challenges, we possess the inner strength to rise—one breath, one pose, and one mindful moment at a time.
