Command the Conversation: Elevate Your English Skills

On September 5, 6, and 12, 2024, we attended the English grammar workshop titled “Command the Conversation: Elevate Your English Skills,” led by the energetic Angeline “Lilet” La Viña. Her dynamic approach set a positive tone for the workshop right from the start.

Grammar Pretest: A Real Eye-Opener

The session began with a grammar pretest where participants identified whether sentences were correct or incorrect, and if incorrect, pinpointed the errors. Many of us realized we were relying on what sounded right rather than analyzing grammar rules accurately. After reviewing our answers, it became clear that there were numerous errors to correct, highlighting the importance of understanding grammar rules rather than trusting intuition.

Common Grammar Errors

Following the pretest, Angeline introduced several common grammar errors that Filipinos often make, including:

  • Confusables: Words that sound similar but have different meanings, such as adapt vs. adopt or assure vs. ensure.
  • Subject-Verb Agreement: Ensuring subjects and verbs agree in number.
  • Verb Tense Usage and Consistency: Maintaining consistent tense throughout sentences.
  • Question Formation: Avoiding issues with double present and past tense.
  • Singular vs. Plural Nouns: Correctly recognizing when to use singular or plural forms.
  • Noncount Noun Usage: Knowing which nouns do not take a plural form.
  • Preposition Usage: Using prepositions correctly based on context.
  • Past Tense Verbs vs. Past Participle Adjectives: Distinguishing between the two forms.
  • Determiner Usage: Understanding how to use determiners appropriately.

These mistakes often occur because Filipinos apply Filipino grammar rules to English. For instance, Filipino pronouns are not gender-specific, so many Filipinos don’t naturally consider gender when using English pronouns. Prepositions also present a challenge, as the Filipino preposition “sa” covers multiple English prepositions like “in,” “at,” or “on.” Additionally, English has more complex noun types and verb tenses that must be used according to specific grammar rules absent in Filipino.

Conquering Confusables

One of the most enlightening parts of the first day was learning about “confusables,” words easily confused due to similar spelling or pronunciation. For example, distinguishing between “adapt” and “adopt” was a significant takeaway. This new awareness improved my understanding of English usage.

Introduction to Tense Usage

On the second day, we dove deeper into tense usage, covering:

  • Present, Past, and Present Perfect Tenses
  • Past Participle Form Exercises
  • The Irregular Verb List

We also explored key questions to ask to avoid confusion with tense usage. Understanding double past and double present tense, along with the use of past participle forms as adjectives, further solidified our grasp of these concepts.

Preposition Usage and More

On the third day of the English grammar workshop, we focused on preposition usage, examining:

  • IN, AT, ON
  • TO
  • Verb-Preposition & Adjective-Preposition Combinations

We also tackled the correct use of singular vs. plural noun forms, articles, and determiners, along with other miscellaneous grammar points, wrapping up our intensive learning.

Post-Test and Confidence Building

At the end of the workshop, we took a post-test. Participants, including myself, demonstrated greater confidence in identifying grammar errors, underscoring the effectiveness of Angeline’s practical teaching style.

A Transformative Experience

This three-day session was more than just an English grammar workshop—it was an eye-opening experience that reshaped my understanding of the language. Angeline La Viña’s engaging teaching methods and practical exercises not only improved my grammar but also boosted my confidence in using English effectively. As I continue to practice what I’ve learned, I feel more equipped to command conversations in both personal and professional settings.
