The 2023 NASSCOM Experience

Together with five colleagues, I attended the NASSCOM Technology and Leadership Forum in Mumbai India last March 1-2, 2023. We also took the opportunity to visit some clients there; however, we didn’t really get a chance to visit a lot of scenic spots due to our tight schedule. Nonetheless, I am grateful that I was able to attend this conference again. Prior to the pandemic, I had always looked forward to attending this conference as it opens my mind to new insights and trends in technology. This year’s conference was not an exception as I was blown away by the quality of speakers and topics discussed.

NASSCOM, short for National Association of Software and Services Companies, is a non-profit organization that serves as the voice of Indian IT and BPO companies, promotes their growth, and makes them globally competitive. It seems that this organization has been doing a great job over the years in attracting investors and locators to set up shop in India, which provides the necessary jobs for the local workforce. Today, the country’s IT and BPO industry is a major pillar, delivering USD3.1 trillion in revenue to the Indian economy.

NASSCOM’s vision for 2023 is to establish India as a global hub for innovation and technology; the number one source of talent supply; and the number one hub in terms of start-ups. Today, the country has 10,000 start-ups, about 27 unicorns, and about USD245 billion worth of foreign direct investment.  There is no doubt that they can become a major world economy in the future. It was amazing how they want to impact the world. Their vision to become the world’s major player in technology is not farfetched. India has a relatively young population, which will perhaps become the drivers of technology in the next 50 years. They are very active in start-ups, not only within IT, but also in the manufacturing sector. Their vision is infectious that they are not leaving anyone behind. Most of all, they have leaders who are driven to transform India in the coming years.

NASSCOM did a good job in tapping the best speakers and gathering insightful resources to cover the various topics lined-up for the conference. Discussions revolved around digitalization, automation, tech trends. Fortunately, despite my little background in technology, I was able to understand bits of the different talks. I found the whole conference enriching and quite laudable. I had not been to India for the last three years.  Having seen a lot of ongoing infrastructure projects during this visit, I can say that they are off to a great year. The government has initiated a lot of projects to support the transformation of India and, at the same time, realize the vision of the country to become the world’s number one hub for technology.
