Shaping the Future: Insights from the 2025 UPCBAAA General Meeting

Philippines Economic Update 2025: Key Insights from UPCBAAA Meeting

On June 23, 2025, we had the privilege of attending the Annual General Members meeting hosted by the UP College of Business Administration Alumni Association (UPCBAAA) at Brittany Hotel, BGC, Taguig. The event gathered a diverse community of alumni, industry leaders, and professionals, all united by shared roots and a commitment to nation-building through business excellence.

Economic Insights from the World Bank

One of the key highlights of the event was a compelling presentation by Jaffar Al-Rikabi, the Senior Country Economist of the World Bank. He walked us through the latest Philippines Economic Update and offered a grounded yet forward-looking analysis of the country’s economic performance. While the Philippine economy continues to show resilience, its growth has slightly slowed, with Q1 2025 growth at 5.4%, down from 5.9% in the same period last year. Key challenges were outlined, ranging from global policy uncertainty to weakening exports and fiscal deficits. Yet, the tone remained constructive. Al-Rikabi emphasized the urgency of policy reforms and investments in infrastructure and skills development to sustain long-term growth, especially with emerging technologies like AI rapidly changing the business landscape.

Panel Discussion: Leadership and Innovation

After the keynote, an engaging panel discussion followed featuring four accomplished leaders: Roberto Alingog (Chairman, Ropali Group of Companies), Raul Pagdanganan (President & CEO, Cardinal Santos Medical Center), Nonoy Quimbo (Founder & CEO, Novelino Wines), and Jun Umali (President & CEO, Gardenia Philippines). Their stories were both inspiring and practical. Each shared candid reflections on how they began their careers—some with humble beginnings and bold pivots—and how they scaled their businesses despite shifting market dynamics. A common thread in their messages was the importance of agility, innovation, and purpose-driven leadership, particularly in a time when technology and AI are rapidly reshaping industries.

Networking and Reconnecting

Beyond the insightful sessions, the gathering provided a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with fellow alumni. Conversations flowed freely over a sumptuous spread, and the room buzzed with shared memories, laughter, and a sense of community. More than just a formal event, it became a meaningful space to learn, reflect, and be inspired.
