EDI@45: A Celebration of Legacy and Thanksgiving

On November 14, 2024, EDI-Staffbuilders International (EDI) celebrated its 45th anniversary with a grand event at Shangri-La at the Fort. The evening began with a cocktail reception from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, which set a festive tone. This celebration marked a significant milestone in the company’s journey from an early entrant to a leading player in the global recruitment industry, particularly known for its commitment to ethical recruitment practices.

A Legacy of Excellence

Initially established to meet the demand for skilled Filipino workers in the Middle East, EDI has successfully adapted to various global trends and challenges, including shifts in government policies and economic fluctuations.

The event reflected how far the company has come since its inception, showcasing its resilience and ability to navigate complex market dynamics.

Today, each letter of EDI represents Excellent Talents, Decent Work, and Improved Lives –these guiding principles have steered the company through decades of transformation and growth.

A Dinner to Remember

Guests enjoyed this vibrant gathering before indulging in an exquisite dinner that featured culinary delights such as Ming Dynasty roasted Peking duck, crispy wasabi-coated prawn balls, and a delightful chilled mango and sago dessert.

What made the dinner even more memorable were the conversations among and between new friends and old friends over red or white wine.

Celebrating Global Partnerships

Esteemed guests from around the world, including representatives from Saudi Arabia, Japan, Germany, Finland, Spain, Australia, Austria, Slovakia, and the USA graced the anniversary event. This international presence underscored EDI’s global reach and the strong partnerships it has built over the years. The evening featured a series of video presentations that traced EDI’s history, transitions, and ongoing innovations.

Toasts from Key Partners

Christian Hallerbach from Germany shared his experience of working with EDI since 2014. He highlighted how the collaboration has been crucial in recruiting nurses trained to speak German. Christian also noted that European Union companies often require business partners who prioritize sustainability and uphold ethical practices when allocating foreign direct investments.

With this criterion in mind, EDI was the perfect choice. He affirmed that EDI operates without placement fees or corruption, a commitment that sets it apart in the industry.

Elina Koskela from Finland spoke about her firsthand experiences with EDI. She shared her career transition from a previous company to her current role as vice president and CEO of one of its subsidiaries. Her reflections emphasized the importance of consistency and transparency in EDI’s service delivery over the years.

Francisco Moreno from Spain recalled hearing about EDI-Staffbuilders International through a colleague. The colleague proudly shared that their project in Qatar employed 500 Filipinos. Francisco shared how he now understands the value of “Filipino power.” He described his interactions with EDI as mostly friendly and pleasant, often during meals. Yet, he always felt reassured that EDI managed job orders professionally and efficiently.

World-renowned economist Dr. Bernardo Villegas praised EDI’s ethical recruitment practices. He emphasized that EDI’s no-placement-fee policy ensures operations remain corruption-free. Dr. Villegas highlighted how these principles foster trust among clients and candidates alike.

His message resonated with attendees as a reminder of EDI’s commitment to integrity. He also discussed the economic contributions of Overseas Filipino Workers to the Philippines and the world. He lauded EDI’s balance between profitability and corporate social responsibility, upholding no-fee policies for job applicants as they pursue becoming modern heroes.

Message From the CEO

In his closing remarks, President & CEO Cesar Averia expressed profound gratitude to all partners and stakeholders for their steadfast support throughout EDI’s journey. He reflected on how John Clements Consultants, established by his predecessor Leocadio Dominguez, addressed the growing international demand for Filipino workers in the 1980s.

Mr. Averia recounted how Mr. Dominguez and Mr. John Clements, an Australian, pioneered professional executive search services in the Philippines. He noted the serendipitous presence of a delegation of Australian business owners and guests at the celebration of EDI-Staffbuilders’ 45th anniversary, suggesting that their presence in this gathering symbolized either a renewal or a full circle of what he hopes to become another longstanding partnership.

Mr. Averia accentuated the importance of business partnerships and relationships in maneuvering through challenges such as changing global trends, immigration policies, and the impacts of the pandemic. He implied that these collaborations have been crucial for EDI-Staffbuilders International to not only survive but also to thrive as an industry leader. His acknowledgment of the collective efforts of all stakeholders reinforced the idea that the foundation of EDI’s successful endeavors anchors on strong business partnerships and its adaptation to evolving global needs.

Looking Ahead and Into the Future

As EDI-Staffbuilders International reflects on its past achievements, it also gazes to the future. The company is embracing technological advancements, including artificial intelligence, to enhance its recruitment processes and service offerings. This forward-thinking approach positions EDI as an adaptable leader in the international recruitment industry.

The evening concluded with Ippon-jime, a traditional Japanese closing ceremony involving rhythmic hand clapping that brought a lively end to the festivities. Participants joined together in this ceremonial act to celebrate fulfillment and completion, symbolizing not only the successful event but also their collective commitment to continuing EDI’s mission into the future.

The 45th anniversary of EDI-Staffbuilders International was not just a celebration of past successes but also a reaffirmation of its commitment to excellence in international recruitment.
