The Art & Craft of Discussion Leadership

True learning thrives in an environment where ideas are free to collide and perspectives converge—where learners challenge, reflect, and grow together. This dynamic experience comes to life in a class fully entrenched in the case study methodology. On October 4, 2024, I had the privilege of attending a workshop titled “The Art and Craft of Discussion Leadership,” conducted by Tully Moss, a veteran facilitator with extensive experience in business and a keen understanding of various industries.

A Shift from Lecture to Active Participation

Right off the bat, we faced a shift from the usual lecture-driven format. Tully provided us with three reading materials that highlighted the contrasting struggles of professors in a classroom and mountaineers braving the fearsome heights of Mt. Everest. We had to study everything in detail, diving deep into the facts and exploring the dilemmas and challenges presented.

We didn’t simply sit passively, waiting for the lecturer to break down the lesson’s inner workings. Instead, we arrived prepared, armed with foundational knowledge that enabled us to engage in discussions with diverse individuals. Tully involved us actively, drawing out our thoughts and ideas to enrich our conversations.

Collaborative Insights and Facilitation Mastery

Beyond the writings on the whiteboard, I gained significant insights from my fellow participants—one of the beautiful aspects of the case study method. This approach allows unexpected insights to surface, often arising from fruitful discussions with others who view the material through different lenses.

Not only did we learn as participants, but we also received a meta-analysis of facilitation itself. How do you capture your students’ attention? What techniques guide them in dissecting case studies and asking targeted questions that encourage deeper thinking? How do you ensure they uncover the deeper lessons hidden behind the dilemmas they study?

Strategies for Engaging Learning Experiences

As we explored the spectrum of participant-driven and instructor-led learning, we discovered various techniques to enhance classroom engagement. Breaking monotony with better interaction strategies, encouraging critical thinking, and adapting to the changing dynamics of the learning environment all contributed to our understanding.

Throughout this enriching experience, Tully and the participants shared numerous amusing anecdotes that kept the energy high and discussions flowing. We connected everything we learned to new information, putting our theoretical knowledge into practice in meaningful ways. I feel fortunate to have had this opportunity and am eager to immerse myself in another similar experience.
