Held last November 22 at La Salle Greenhills, the 11th Youth for Leadership Summit 2025 carried the theme “Builders and Shapers of a New AI-Integrated World.” Its “Shift + Lead” segment stood as a powerful call to action for the next generation of Filipino innovators. With technology reshaping every corner of modern life, young leaders were not merely preparing for the future—they were actively building it. The session brought together voices from education, technology, investments, and business development to explore what it truly means to innovate in an AI-integrated world.
Their shared message was clear: innovation begins with people, and emerging leaders must step forward with curiosity, courage, and purpose.
Setting the Stage: Innovation Starts with You
The session opened with reflections on the keynote delivered by Denise Fabella, Executive Director of Khan Academy Philippines. She emphasized that AI is a tool—powerful, yes, but only as meaningful as the people who use it. What drives true innovation is human intention: the curiosity to explore, the willingness to learn, and the discipline to prepare for opportunity. Fabella’s message grounded the conversation: technology amplifies human potential, but humans remain at the center of change.

Her examples from classrooms in Panabo and Dumaguete highlighted how innovation thrives not because conditions are perfect, but because communities choose to act. In these schools, teachers and students use digital tools not as replacements, but as bridges toward empowerment and mastery. Innovation, she reminded the audience, is deeply human. It begins with questions—your questions. And every young innovator must nurture the curiosity that fuels bold ideas.
The Trailblazers: Leaders Redefining Innovation
“Shift + Lead” brought together three speakers, each representing a different facet of the Philippines’ evolving innovation ecosystem:
Earl Ng
Vice President for Business Development
Ng Khai Development Corporation
Miguel Macale
Senior Investment Manager
Ideaspace Ventures
Matthew “Sushi” Tan
Head of Core Business Products
PayMongo
These leaders shared their insights on innovation not as a distant concept, but as a lived reality—one shaped by challenges, opportunities, and the worldviews they’ve embraced throughout their careers.
Innovation Is Human Centered
Earl Ng resonated most strongly with Fabella’s message: AI is just a tool, but innovation starts with you. He pointed out that curiosity, preparedness, and the love of learning form the foundation of meaningful innovation. Ng emphasized that students must actively build skills today, so they are ready when opportunity arrives. Success, he said, lies at the intersection of preparation and opportunity—and young innovators must take responsibility for their own growth.

He reiterated that accessible platforms like Khan Academy equip learners for this preparation stage. But ultimately, the willingness to explore, experiment, and lead comes from within.
Solving “Big, Nasty Problems”
For Miguel Macale, innovation means focusing on real human problems—not just shiny technologies. In his work at Ideaspace Ventures, he evaluates founders based on their ability to solve deep, systemic issues rooted in everyday Filipino experiences. Macale explained that too often innovation is mistaken for convenience or trendiness. In reality, the most impactful innovations simplify complexity, widen access, and democratize solutions for communities that need them most.

He shared how the Philippines is not lacking in talent but in equitable access to opportunities. Through partnerships with organizations like DOST, DICT, and DTI, Ideaspace and QBO Innovation support student-led and faculty-led startups in universities nationwide. These initiatives bring innovation to the grassroots—ensuring that young innovators from far-flung regions have the same chances as those in major urban centers.
Leading Through Life’s Changing Seasons
Matthew Tan offered a grounded, personal perspective on how decisions shape leadership journeys. He reminded young audiences that their choices will evolve as their lives evolve. Career decisions are never one-size-fits-all; they are shaped by personal responsibilities, circumstances, and long-term aspirations. At times, young professionals may need to choose stability. At other times, they may have the freedom to build new skills, explore risks, or pursue personal growth.

Tan emphasized that leadership is not a linear path—it is a series of informed decisions made with honesty, awareness, and courage. What matters is being truthful about where you are, and intentional about where you want to go.
Innovation Beyond the Metro: Expanding Access Nationwide

One of the most important insights from the session came from Macale’s discussion on regional innovation. Historically, the Philippine startup ecosystem has been concentrated in key cities like Manila, Cebu, and Bacolod. But Ideaspace’s mission extends far beyond these centers. Their nationwide outreach programs, incubators, and grants empower innovators from underrepresented communities. This commitment breaks longstanding barriers that restrict talent development.
Innovation flourishes when diverse perspectives are heard—and the Philippines’ regional diversity is a strength waiting to be unlocked.
Empowering Emerging Innovators: What Shift + Lead Truly Means
The heart of “Shift + Lead” is a mindset shift. To lead innovation, young Filipinos must:
- Stay curious. Curiosity opens doors to new ideas and opportunities.
- Build skills intentionally. Preparation determines the ability to seize future opportunities.
- Focus on human-centered problems. Innovation serves people—not technology.
- Acknowledge personal context. Leadership decisions evolve with life circumstances.
- Demand equitable access. Every young innovator deserves resources and support.
The speakers highlighted that innovation is not a gift; it is a discipline. It requires active learning, consistent practice, and the courage to step into unfamiliar spaces.
Most importantly, innovation demands leadership—leadership rooted in empathy, clarity, and purpose.

The Future Is Human-Led and AI-Enabled
Throughout the session, a recurring message emerged: AI is not the innovator—you are. AI can guide thinking, unlock insights, and expand possibilities, but it cannot replace vision, intention, or the unique human ability to imagine new futures. Innovators must learn to integrate technology with creativity, heart, and leadership. That is how meaningful progress happens.

“Shift + Lead” challenged emerging leaders to embrace this duality: use technology fearlessly but lead with humanity.
