Bingo sa Van Gogh: A Night of Luck, Laughter, and Lessons at John Clements

Every company has that one event employees look forward to all year. At John Clements, that event is none other than the bingo night, a  fun employee engagement filled with excitement, friendly competition, unexpected twists, and unforgettable moments.

This year’s edition, cleverly titled “Bingo sa Van Gogh” (by yours truly), brought employees together for an evening that felt less like a company event and more like a reunion of friends sharing laughter, stories, and a little bit of chaos over bingo cards.

Held in the vibrant and artistic atmosphere of the Van Gogh room, the event transformed a simple game of chance into a memorable celebration of community and camaraderie. Employees from different departments gathered with one goal in mind: to win big. Yet by the end of the night, many discovered that the real prize had little to do with cash, gift certificates, or sacks of rice.

The Story Behind “Bingo sa Van Gogh”

The event title itself already carried a fun backstory.

Earlier this year, during only my second day at John Clements, I jokingly suggested calling the annual event “Bingo sa Van Gogh” after hearing teammates talk about the yearly tradition held at the venue. What started as a casual joke eventually became reality five months later, adding a personal and playful touch to the occasion.

That spirit perfectly reflected the energy of the event. Lighthearted. Creative. Relaxed. Yet incredibly engaging.

For some employees, bingo was already a familiar pastime. Others admitted they had only ever played during wakes or family gatherings. Still, everyone arrived ready to test their luck.

As the first bingo balls rolled, conversations quickly faded into silence. Eyes locked onto cards. Snacks paused midway to mouths. The entire room became laser-focused.

The game was officially on.

Round One: The Race for the X Pattern

The night started with the opening round, instantly raising the excitement inside the venue.

Employees carefully followed every number being called while trying not to miss a single mark on their cards. The tension built quickly, and before long, ‘X’ marked the spot for Sir Charles Caluza as he claimed the first victory of the night with, you guessed it, the X pattern.

Cheers erupted across the room.

The win energized the crowd and set the tone for the remaining rounds. Suddenly, everyone believed they had a shot at taking home one of the bigger prizes.

Friendly Competition Takes Over

The second round featured the H pattern, and things immediately became more intense.

In one dramatic moment, Judy Ann Sonio and Vanessa Pafil shouted “Bingo!” almost simultaneously, creating a burst of excitement and laughter among the crowd. Moments like these reminded everyone why company events matter. The competition stayed fierce, but the atmosphere remained warm and supportive.

By the third round, the Pyramid pattern pushed players into full concentration mode.

Some participants purchased multiple cards to increase their chances of winning. Others relied purely on luck and intuition. I noticed my eyesight suddenly felt sharper during the game than on most normal days, especially after realizing I was only a few numbers away from victory.

Just as hope peaked, Excel Gozun shouted “BINGO!” and secured the round. Groans, laughter, and playful complaints filled the room.

Everyone knew exactly how that felt.

The Final Stretch: All or Nothing

As the evening progressed, the atmosphere became louder, more competitive, and even more entertaining.

The Outside Edge round produced three winners: Jerome Balusero, Junelene Pinca, and Sir Gerald Garcillano. Their victory showed just how unpredictable bingo can be. One moment you feel completely behind, and the next moment you are suddenly back in the game.

Still, the most anticipated round remained the blackout game.

The final round carried an entirely different energy. Every employee sat on the edge of their seat. Some stared at their cards like seasoned strategists preparing for battle. Others laughed nervously while clutching markers and hoping luck would finally land in their favor.

I described the moment dramatically, comparing myself to a vulture scanning the desert for survival. The pressure felt real.

At one point, victory seemed close.

Only a few numbers remained unchecked.

Then came the heartbreaking sound that ended the dream.

“Bingo!” shouted Rean Cyril Marudo from behind the crowd.

The room exploded with reactions while others jokingly mourned their lost chances. It was dramatic, hilarious, and completely unforgettable.

More Than Just a Game

Although bingo revolves around luck, the event surprisingly delivered meaningful reflections about life and work.

Unlike games built around skill or strategy, bingo depends heavily on chance. No one can fully predict which numbers will appear next. No one can guarantee victory regardless of how many cards they purchase.

That realization resonated deeply with many employees.

Life works in much the same way.

Not everything can be forecasted. Not every opportunity arrives exactly as planned. Success often depends on making smart decisions about where to invest time, energy, and resources while remaining adaptable when circumstances suddenly change.

The event served as a reminder that uncertainty is part of every journey. What matters most is how people respond to it.

That lesson felt especially relevant in today’s fast-paced professional environment, where adaptability, resilience, and teamwork continue to play vital roles in career growth.

Special Games and Crowd Favorites

Beyond the main rounds, the event featured several entertaining mini-games that kept the energy high throughout the night.

One crowd favorite involved random “number winner” challenges where participants competed in rock-paper-scissors battles until only one person remained standing. Winners included Angelica Balud, Emily Damaso, Jeasette, Queeny Cacal, Kate Terazzola, Julie Dioquino, Ralph Marty, MJ, Jolo Mercado, Ces, Angelica Leonardo, John Mark Mejia, Caselyn Aglipay, Shelou Vergara, Glen Pollarca, Narry Bel Amad, Carmina Collado, and several others.

The event also recognized participants through fun and creative awards that added even more personality to the night.

Some of the standout recognitions included:

  • Most Competitive Award – John Mark Mejia
  • Mata-Linaw Award – Glen Pollarca
  • Nonchalant Award – Pamela Sables
  • Marites of the Night – Judy Ann Sonio
  • Most Cards Purchased – Grace Alcid, Emily Damaso, Charles Caluza

Additional prizes ranged from breakfast buffet gift certificates and shopping vouchers to cooking oil, spaghetti packs, egg trays, coffee vouchers, and cash prizes.

Every winner brought another wave of cheers and laughter.

Even employees who did not win major prizes still found themselves enjoying every moment of the event.

Building Connections Beyond Work

One of the biggest takeaways from Bingo sa Van Gogh was the importance of employee engagement.

Workplaces thrive when employees feel connected not only through tasks and deadlines but also through shared experiences. Events like this strengthen relationships between teams, encourage collaboration, and create memories that employees carry long after the night ends.

Many attendees described the event as one of the most enjoyable employee engagement activities the company has organized, second only to the memorable company outing held earlier this year.

That says a lot.

In an era where workplace culture continues to shape employee satisfaction and retention, moments like these help reinforce a sense of belonging within the organization.

A Night Worth Remembering

By the end of the evening, employees walked away with more than prizes and giveaways.

They left with stories.

Stories about near wins, dramatic losses, hilarious reactions, and unforgettable moments shared with coworkers. More importantly, they left with stronger connections and a renewed appreciation for the company culture that encourages both hard work and meaningful engagement.

Bingo sa Van Gogh proved that even the simplest activities can create powerful experiences when people come together with the right energy and spirit.

Sometimes, all it takes is a bingo card, a little luck, and a room full of people ready to have fun.
