  • A Grateful Farewell: Ambassador MaryKay Carlson Concludes a Remarkable Tenure in the Philippines

As United States Ambassador to the Philippines MaryKay Carlson delivered her farewell remarks to the American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, she spoke with unmistakable warmth, gratitude, and admiration for a country she has called home for the past three and a half years. Her message—deeply personal yet diplomatically resonant—captured the essence of a tenure she described as “the greatest honor and most rewarding experience” of her 40‑year career in the U.S. Department of State.

Ambassador Carlson’s departure marks the close of a chapter distinguished by strengthened bilateral ties, expanded economic engagements, and a series of people‑centered initiatives. But beyond the metrics of diplomacy, what endeared her most to Filipinos was her genuine love for the country, its culture, and its people.

A Tenure Defined by Partnership and Progress

In her speech, Ambassador Carlson reflected on the depth and breadth of the U.S.–Philippines relationship—a partnership she repeatedly described as unique, resilient, and built upon “people‑to‑people ties.” She highlighted how the histories, families, businesses, and everyday lives of both nations remain deeply intertwined, forming what she called a springboard for limitless cooperation.

Under her watch, the economic partnership continued to flourish. Two‑way trade surpassed $23.5 billion in 2024, with the U.S. remaining the Philippines’ single largest export market. American companies, she noted, continue to be among the country’s major employers and taxpayers, contributing significantly to sectors such as transportation infrastructure and the semiconductor ecosystem.

Carlson also emphasized landmark cooperation initiatives launched during her service. These included the $63 million (₱3 billion) U.S. commitment to support energy security, combat illegal fishing in the South China Sea, and mobilize private investment along the Luzon Economic Corridor. She further cited the $250 million announced in 2024 to address public health challenges in the Philippines—one of the largest foreign assistance allocations globally during that period.

“These aren’t just figures on a page,” she reminded the audience. “They represent real momentum… and tangible, positive impacts on the lives and livelihoods of both Filipinos and Americans.”

A Diplomat Beloved on Social Media

What sets Ambassador Carlson apart from many diplomats is her immense popularity on social media. With thousands of Filipino followers—myself included—on Instagram and Facebook, she has become a familiar and endearing public figure. Her online presence offered Filipinos a rare glimpse into the daily life of a diplomat: warm interactions with communities, food trips, cultural events, local festivals, and dedicated advocacies.

Her posts often went viral because they felt heartfelt, genuine, and refreshingly personal. Whether she was sampling local delicacies, joining public events, or sharing snapshots from the countryside, Ambassador Carlson used digital platforms not as a stage but as a bridge.

A Love for the Countryside and Four Filipino Christmases

One of the highlights of her reflections was her deep appreciation for the Philippines’ natural beauty and cultural richness. She shared how she traveled extensively—from Pagudpud in the north to Davao in the south—always eager to meet local communities and experience their stories firsthand.

Her fondness for Filipino Christmas traditions became one of her most recognizable trademarks. Having stayed 3.5 years in the country, she enjoyed four Christmas seasons—an experience she considered a special blessing. She delighted Filipinos by singing Filipino Christmas songs, a gesture that further endeared her to communities both online and offline.

Recognizing Partnerships and Looking Ahead

Ambassador Carlson expressed sincere appreciation for AmCham Philippines, calling it “a dynamic and impressive group” and praising its 100‑year legacy of connecting businesses, government, and opportunities. She extended special recognition to Executive Director Ebb Hinchliffe for his longstanding leadership.

Though she is retiring from government service, Ambassador Carlson pledged to remain an active “cheerleader” for U.S.–Philippine relations. With her embassy team continuing the work and her Deputy Chief of Mission set to serve as Chargé d’Affaires, she assured stakeholders of continuity and unwavering commitment.

A Heartfelt Goodbye but Not the Last

In closing her speech, Ambassador Carlson affirmed what many Filipinos already sensed: that the Philippines has become a part of her heart. She departs with deep friendships, meaningful memories, and a promise that this is not goodbye, but “see you later.”

For her Filipino followers, including many who admired her warmth and authenticity on social media—Ambassador MaryKay Carlson leaves behind a legacy defined not only by diplomatic milestones, but by the kindness, sincerity, and humanity she shared throughout her journey.

Mabuhay, Ambassador Carlson and thank you.
