Artificial intelligence is shaping our world faster than many of us could have predicted. Yet at the same time, beneath all the algorithms, data sets, and digital tools lies one essential truth: technology alone cannot define the future. People do. Ultimately, this was the central message of the second segment of the 11th Youth for Leadership Summit at La Salle Greenhills that gathered leaders and visionaries to discuss how AI is transforming industries, careers, and the heart of the work we do.
Understanding AI Beyond the Basics
The discussion opened with a powerful reminder that AI carries a deeper meaning than most of us realize. For the speakers, it’s not just another technological advancement. Instead, it is a call to learn, unlearn, and relearn—an invitation to stay curious as the world adopts tools that stretch far beyond traditional boundaries.
Germaine Kaw, Founder & COO of MedGrocer, shared how technology shaped not only her career but also her understanding of what meaningful innovation truly looks like. She emphasized that the rapid evolution of AI demands continuous exploration. Therefore, we must challenge ourselves to see its potential and limitations with clear eyes. While AI can analyze patterns, automate tasks, and scale services with incredible speed, it still lacks something only humans can provide: care, courage, and purpose.
The MedGrocer Turning Point
To illustrate this, Germaine took the audience back to the early days of MedGrocer, which began as an online pharmacy aimed at making medicines easier to access. The platform enabled patients to order prescription drugs online and have them delivered straight to their homes—long before digital healthcare became a mainstream conversation.
However, everything changed during the COVID‑19 pandemic. What started as a convenient solution became a lifeline for thousands of Filipinos. The crisis pushed MedGrocer into a defining moment. “We want to be able to help patients when they need us the most,” Germaine said, recalling the urgency of those months.

Consequently, the pandemic highlighted a tremendous gap in accessibility, and MedGrocer stepped into that space with intention. The mission of delivering drugs to people’s doorsteps evolved into something larger: delivering healthcare service in a way that is both accessible and human centered. Technology enabled the system, but compassion fueled the work.
Where AI Helps—and Where It Never Will
In today’s AI‑driven era, Germaine explained that technology can accomplish incredible tasks. It can process massive data sets in seconds, predict trends, streamline operations, and support care delivery in new ways. Even so, it still cannot do what humans do best.
AI cannot care, cannot feel, and cannot fight for a cause.
These limitations reveal a powerful insight: the future does not belong to technology alone—it belongs to people who are creative enough to leverage that technology with heart and courage. To move forward, we must understand not only how AI works but why we use it in the first place.
Knowing Your “Why”
One of the most compelling ideas from the session centered on purpose. Germaine stressed that strength in leadership comes from knowing your “why”—the purpose that you are willing to live for and fight for. Without clarity of purpose, even the best tools lose meaning.

Naturally, this message resonated strongly across the panel. AI may change the way we work, but it should never change the core of who we are or what we stand for. As roles evolve and industries shift, the real challenge is internal: Can we stay grounded in our values while embracing innovation?

Leading with the heart does not mean ignoring data or resisting technology. Rather, it simply means allowing purpose to guide decisions, asking ourselves the right questions before moving forward, and choosing courage over convenience.
The Role We All Play
As the conversation expanded, the panelists encouraged everyone in the room to reflect on their personal and professional roles in this changing landscape. Whether we work in healthcare, HR, operations, or any other field, we share a collective responsibility: to engage with technology thoughtfully and to ensure that its integration strengthens, rather than replaces, the human elements that make work meaningful. This requires honesty. It requires curiosity. Most importantly, it requires courage to step into uncertainty with purpose as our compass.

Insights From the Panel
The event also featured a dynamic panel discussion with industry professionals who shared their experiences and perspectives. Together, their insights reinforced the theme that purpose‑driven leadership will define the way AI is used across industries.

Ultimately, each speaker brought a unique viewpoint—Germaine Kaw emphasized compassion‑driven innovation in healthcare, Ibba Bernardo highlighted how digital tools are reshaping organizational processes, Zhiela Santillan underscored the need for adaptability and continuous learning, and Lorena Biclar stressed the importance of balancing innovation with empathy to build resilient teams. Yet despite their diverse perspectives, they all echoed the same message: AI becomes truly powerful only when paired with human intention and purpose.
Looking Ahead: A Future Built on Heart and Innovation
As the session came to a close, one idea stood out above all: we must not fear the future—we must shape it. Technology will continue to advance at a pace that challenges us, but it also offers opportunities we have never seen before. Thus, the question is whether we will use these tools with clarity, creativity, and courage.
The future belongs to those who understand that AI is not the main character in the story we are writing. We are. Our purpose gives technology direction, our values give it meaning, and our leadership ensures that innovation uplifts rather than divides.
