At John Clements Consultants Inc., growth isn’t just a goal – it’s part of our DNA. I recently had the privilege of joining the Breakthrough Development Program, one of the company’s core leadership programs designed for early-career professionals. What started as a professional development opportunity became something far more personal – a journey of learning, resilience, and connection.
A Holistic Learning Experience
Over the course of eight immersive sessions, each spanning three hours, we were guided by expert facilitators including Grace Alcid, Director of Learning & Development, and Keven Guanco, Program Manager. Alongside peers from John Clements, EDI-Staffbuilders International Inc. and Khan Academy, we dove into real-world case studies from Harvard Business Publishing, blending theory with practical, competency-driven learning.
Here are the moments that truly made an impact:
1. Time Management
With Mr. Dondi Mapa, former Regional Chief Privacy Officer at Citi, we learned how to align our time with our values. “It’s not about doing more – it’s about doing what matters.” That simple truth reframed how I approach my day.
2. Goal Setting
Dr. Grace Alcid helped us turn dreams into roadmaps. I walked away with clear, actionable goals that feel within reach, and a renewed sense of purpose to chase them.
3. Decision Making
This session gave me tools to weigh options more clearly and choose with confidence. I now understand that good decisions aren’t always easy, but they can be intentional and informed.
4. Managing One’s Boss
Leadership goes both ways. Tushima Kumar, Managing Director at Accenture, taught us how to build trust and communicate upward effectively – skills that are often overlooked but incredibly powerful.
5. Persuading and Influencing Others
This session made me rethink how I communicate. Influence isn’t about volume, it’s about empathy, clarity, and authenticity.
6. Customer Focus
We explored what it truly means to serve. Understanding the real needs of customers and responding with empathy helps us create lasting relationships, not just transactions.
7. Feedback Essentials
One of the most transformative sessions. We practiced giving and receiving feedback that supports growth, not ego. I left feeling more prepared to foster a culture of openness and continuous improvement.
8. Working in a Team
Here, we dove into collaboration, trust-building, and navigating differences. I was reminded that great teams aren’t just built on skills, they’re built on understanding and shared commitment.
The People Made It Personal
While the learning was rich, what truly moved me were the human stories shared among classmates. Behind every brave face was someone overcoming a challenge – like a first-time mom commuting daily from Bulacan to Makati, or a classmate who attended sessions despite grieving the loss of a loved one.
There were participants striving to improve their English, some quietly brilliant with fresh perspectives, and others fearlessly speaking up for what they believe in. These individuals inspired me deeply – they gained my respect. They weren’t just classmates. They became mirrors, reminders, and motivators. And when I was honored with the “Best in Class” award on our June 4 graduation, it felt like a win we all shared.
Why Leadership Programs Like This Matter
The Breakthrough Development Program is one of those rare leadership programs that doesn’t just teach skills – it shapes people. It challenges your habits, encourages your voice, and reminds you that leadership begins long before the title.
I walked in curious. I walked out more grounded, more capable, and more connected to a purpose greater than myself.
To our facilitators, classmates, and the people behind this transformative experience – thank you. You’ve helped shape the leader I’m becoming.
