The Joint Foreign Chambers’ culminating event was more than just a networking night—it provided a unique opportunity for Filipino-American young professionals to rediscover their roots, connect with local peers, and explore ways to give back to the Philippines. Through the weeklong program, these delegates gained a deeper understanding of Filipino culture, forming meaningful connections with local businesses, government officials, and communities. Each delegate’s project reflects a commitment to leveraging their expertise and resources to make a lasting impact in both the United States and the Philippines, bridging gaps and addressing critical needs across diverse fields.
Projects Empowering Filipino Communities
Several delegates shared projects designed to empower and uplift Filipino communities. For instance, Nanor Wong, an immigration attorney, presented her vision for a virtual, pro-bono legal clinic to assist undocumented Filipino immigrants and DACA recipients. Her project aims to guide individuals through complex immigration challenges and bridge the access gap for those lacking financial means. Sheila, with a background in education and nonprofit work, introduced her project on preventing online sexual abuse of children—a pressing issue affecting one in every hundred children. Her initiative combines prevention, education, and social enterprise to address and reduce this abuse, offering a safer online experience for Filipino youth. Another delegate, Gabriel Kramer-De La Cruz, an Emmy-winning journalist, shared his plans to use storytelling to shed light on press access and freedom, highlighting the media’s role in preserving democracy and truth.
Initiatives for Tangible Impact
Other projects also reflected the delegates’ desire to make a tangible impact. Michael Balaton, a medical student and grant recipient, aims to improve colorectal cancer screening at the provincial level, with a plan to scale this initiative nationwide for greater accessibility. Myla Ramirez, a government scientist specializing in climate change resilience, presented her project for a fellowship program to train emerging leaders in environmental stewardship. Meanwhile, Alyssa Trinidad, an accountant with the Federal Reserve, introduced her “Sukli Series,” a financial literacy and wellness initiative focused on the Filipino immigrant population in New York and New Jersey. Through straightforward financial guidance, she hopes to empower immigrants with the knowledge they need to make sound financial decisions. Each of these legacy projects underscores the delegates’ commitment to reconnecting with their heritage while actively contributing to the welfare and progress of the Filipino community.
A Night of Connection and Collaboration
The vibrant gathering fostered valuable connections between Filipino-American young professionals and key figures from the Philippine business community. Held at the scenic rooftop of the Makati Diamond Hotel, it created a lively atmosphere filled with conversations, food, and drinks, where delegates mingled with local business leaders, government representatives, and members of various chambers of commerce. This setup offered an ideal space for exchanging ideas, sharing aspirations, and learning from each other’s experiences.
Inspiring Future Partnerships
Throughout the night, guests discussed cultural heritage, the importance of giving back, and the many ways these young professionals could make meaningful contributions to the Philippines. As delegates shared their legacy projects, they received insights and encouragement from their Filipino peers, further strengthening their resolve to create impactful initiatives. The event not only served as a celebration of their journey back to their roots but also as an inspiring launchpad for future partnerships and collaborations that could benefit both countries.
