Matty Lin Unveils the Transformative Impact of Generative AI

Mr. Matty Lin’s presentation at the Management Association of the Philippines’ 22nd International CEO Conference focused on the transformative impact of Generative AI (GenAI) in the creative industry, particularly on platforms like TikTok. GenAI refers to artificial intelligence models that can generate new content—such as text, images, or videos—by learning patterns from existing data. Matty began by engaging the audience, asking how many people use TikTok and how many have created content using AI tools like ChatGPT. The high response rate underscored the growing prevalence of AI in everyday life, setting the stage for discussing how GenAI will revolutionize creative business operations.

Empowering Through Technology

Matty Lin shared that AI extends human capabilities in surprising ways. For instance, through TikTok, he has learned to speak 11 different languages using digital avatars, far beyond what most people can achieve. This technology, involving deepfake and synthetic media, empowers people by breaking down language barriers and creating new opportunities for global communication. He emphasized that this kind of technological empowerment is not science fiction but a real tool that allows businesses to tap into new markets and communities in the diverse and complex landscape of Southeast Asia.

AI Adoption in the APAC Region

According to a recent study, the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region is projected to be the global leader in AI adoption, growing 30% faster than North America and Europe from now until 2031. Despite this growth potential, only 24% of business-to-business (B2B) marketers currently use AI tools, highlighting a significant gap between the perceived potential of AI and its actual usage in the market. Matty stressed that embracing AI is not just a matter of “if” but “when,” as it becomes an integral part of the business landscape.

TikTok’s Commitment to Responsible AI

As an entertainment platform, TikTok has committed to integrating AI responsibly by partnering with global and regional thought leaders to continually refine AI technology. In 2023, TikTok launched a synthetic media framework and updated its media policies to require AI-generated content to be labeled, reinforcing the importance of transparency and safety. Matty invited industry partners to collaborate in creating holistic solutions that promote trust and accountability in the AI ecosystem.

The Evolution of Digital Content Creation

Matty Lin explained the transformative value of GenAI by outlining the evolution of digital content creation over the past decades: from the “Age of Context” before 2000, to the “Age of Knowledge” in the 2000s, the “Age of Social” in the 2010s, and now the “Age of Content” in the 2020s. On TikTok, personalized recommendation engines drive a variety of consumer behaviors, including streaming, searching, influencing, and shopping. This convergence of commerce, community, and culture demands a continuous flow of diverse, high-quality, and engaging content.

Challenges and Opportunities for Content Creators

One key trend Matty highlighted is the 19% growth in video creation on TikTok, presenting both a challenge and an opportunity for content creators. The question is how to keep pace with the growing demand for content that is not only engaging but also cost-effective. Generative AI addresses this by democratizing content creation, enabling anyone to produce high-quality videos, text, or audio regardless of technical skills. He argued that while AI boosts efficiency, human creativity remains crucial, especially in the phases of ideation, production, and optimization.

Introducing TikTok’s Symphony Suite

Matty Lin introduced TikTok’s Symphony Suite, a set of AI-powered tools designed to support creators and businesses in content creation:

  1. Symphony Assistant helps creators identify trending content on TikTok and provides creative guidance, auto-generating ideas based on a simple script, streamlining the creative process.
  2. Symphony Creative Studio offers significant cost savings in content production (at least 15%), with features like auto-translation, dubbing, and customizable avatars, enabling creators to quickly produce content tailored to local or global audiences.
  3. AIGC (AI-Generated Content) Disclosure Toggle is a feature that allows creators to indicate whether their content is AI-generated or modified, enhancing transparency and maintaining trust with viewers.

The Human Element in AI

Matty emphasized that while AI feels like magic, it must be grounded in the human experience to be truly impactful. He highlighted a collaboration with Dentsu called “Face of Courage,” which used human avatars to help domestic violence victims safely tell their stories, demonstrating AI’s potential to give voice to sensitive issues in creative and empathetic ways.

Encouraging Businesses to Embrace Generative AI

Matty then encouraged businesses to embrace GenAI by integrating human insights into AI-driven processes, maintaining transparency, and building trust with communities. He advised companies to think big but start small, continuously creating, experimenting, and adapting to see what works best in their context. Lin stressed that while AI is still in its early stages, leveraging it wisely can unlock enormous value and reshape industries for the better.
